So well said! If not, for the rewards telling me how to earn them, there is functionality I would never have organically come across or learned how to use that I now find incredibly valuable
I love this idea! Could the double thumb tap be done in between to list items, replacing the insert function we have currently?
I just pushed an updated navigations experiments build to this TestFlight group:
• Keeps double loaded pull to add / go back
• Replaces invisible back button with swipe down along left or right side of screen
• Replaces scheduling double loaded swipe with natural language trigger (take 2, combines with the wheel UI)
• Some refinements to the new card presentation
• Elastic resistance for side swipe actions
• No floating visible ‘new button’ experiment, we are going to try to do a better job onboarding Clear’s gestures
May shoot another updated demo video tomorrow or weekend, but curious if any of you give it a try what you think of it so far.
Two finger tap may return as a generalized, personalizable gesture, and if so ‘insert’ could be a useful option to pair with it.
For the love of all that is good and sacred, please don’t remove the pull-to-add gesture.
It’s change for the sake of change again, and showing lack of confidence on your own existing solution (an interaction with great visual and haptic feedback), which becomes second nature and can be learnt in a tutorial in five seconds. And the same goes for adding items with two fingers… Why? If you don’t remove the swipe-to-add gesture, it will indeed be redundant. If you must improve accessibility, please find other ways to do it and add them as customizable interface elements and behaviours (which should be easily accessible on first boot, of course).
As for Clear Web, I didn’t want to be mean, and I understand there’s many Windows or even Linux users who may be ecstatic about it, but as a Mac user who actually got to experience the native version of Clear for Mac, the mere thought of it feels like a downgrade and a bit of a slap in the face. That’s even worse of an idea than an Electron app, let alone letting users run the iPad app on the Mac or actually convert it into a Catalyst one (which, I’m guessing, may be two of the possible routes you will be taking later on? But what about the tearable, floating lists?). And… are you even coming up with one, like, ever? The fact that now you’re coming up with a “good enough” solution – “it wasn’t, in fact, a good enough solution” – and even went as far as saying it’s “accessible on the Mac” (of course it is, but that’s not what Mac users were asking for and shows a complete lack of understanding of the Mac market ) makes me actively fear for the future of that native version. Yes, I’d love to have an Apple Watch app again, but I did try the old one way back when, found it a bit cramped (maybe now, with a bigger Series 7 watch, it might improve, but still) and I realized I still used the Mac one much more frequently…
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m perfectly happy to help you and to provide you with honest feedback, as if I was actually using Clear daily, but I don’t see myself ever coming back to doing so until we get a native Mac app back. Until then, yes, I’ll be content with whatever undercooked Sherlocking of your app Apple mustered (in this case, it’s the Reminders app), sorry. And, heck, if it’s so complex and expensive to develop, make it a separate, slightly more expensive purchase on the MAS if you must.
Pull to remove is not removed in the beta I just posted.
Pull to add is there.
I like this so far. Haven’t noticed any bugs in the changes either.
I wasn’t sure I’d like the swipe down (left or right) to go back as I’ve developed a strong tap the bottom of screen to go back habit BUT now the I’ve used it a bit I like it a lot. Nice you can pretty much swipe anywhere on the left or right side as well rather than having to start at a specific spot on the screen.
While I didn’t mind the tap to back method I did find myself, even after all this time, instinctively tapping that area if there happened to be a thought I wanted to edit or a theme color I wanted to change. I’d have to scroll the page up a bit so I wouldn’t accidentally tap to go back instead of tapping what was in that spot at the time. This new method completely negates that and that’s good.
Is Clear web already available and if not, when it will be?
Still in the works. I think we will roll out testing of iOS sync first, and then hopefully web as like phase 2.
On the gestures front, will be taking a stab at personalizable gestures next week which I think will let us thread this needle of accommodating muscle memory but also moving things forward.
This is a mockup we are looking at:
Installed V.100 9192 beta. I like the changes. Especially the settings to use or not use pull to add or the back button. I ended up leaving all setting for those on and found I use the back button and side swipes to go back for different reasons and whatever feels more natural for the task. Brilliant in my opinion!
I tend to use the back button when collecting thoughts to move to other lists and the side swipe for most other random go backs.
I use pull to add quite a bit so I left that on as I rarely have had conflicts with that gesture while side swiping to go back (though it has happened). That’s more of me getting used to the side swipe gesture than an app issue though.
Good to hear. I think the plan is shifting to possibly releasing this remaster update on its own (separate from Clear X) and without the personalization side as much, just so we can start shipping pieces of this giant project off our plate.
Latest build:
Navigation reboot updates:
• Pinch to go back restored and improved animation
• Invisible back button restored
• New ‘edge swipe’ margin increased slightly for easier grabbing
• New settings to disable back button or double loaded pull to add
The goal would be to make this a fairly painless, crowdpleaser of a remaster. I think it’s getting there. (We will have to onboard the change in reminders, but hopefully if we do that properly it isn’t too bad.)
Obviously all of your feedback has shaped this project quite a bit, was able to recruit a couple dozen people from twitter as well and been chatting with them as they try it out. Anyone following this thread, please give the latest a try!
I’ve loved this app since the old days and I’ve been stoked to see it come alive and this has been the best beta experience I’ve had (of many) because I do feel like you guys do more than listen to users. All that and the app is just one of those apps that could honestly live forever.
To add: I installed the latest beta that came out today after I posted earlier (couple posts up) and I noticed the release stated that the edge swipe was gone for more time in the oven. Were you talking about the downward edge swipe right or left to go back? If so I noticed it’s still there in the latest update (beta) unless you meant it would be removed for the next App Store release.
Ah whoops I’ll check into that. Yeah it’s the new swipe down on left or right margin of screen gesture that we are pulling back for now, to really scope this to the safest possible release. (That also I don’t think particularly compromises our longterm plans.)
You can still pull down at the top of a list to back out.
There was more pressure on it before when we were considering replacing the back button, but now that we plan to keep it in I think we can always layer it on later.
New build with some changes to the NLP reminders:
• Will no longer delete the word if you set a reminder, I think this feels a bit simpler…
• Slight (less than half second) delay before suggestion for setting reminder pops up which feels less noisy in a good way
I think I will shoot a demo video of this and tweet it tomorrow maybe to get some more testers trying the latest.
Gotcha cool. I forgot to mention I do use the pull down from top to back out but since the tap bottom to go back “button” is there I do use that more.
Hard to say what I prefer though. The left or right swipe is great in certain use cases and the invisible button is great in others. It seems most people like the button and I’m happy with that.
So anyway yes, the pull down left or right is still functional for me in this latest build and wanted to let you know. thanks for the replies!
For the beta testing: Noticed that if you tap a reminder that already exists and try to change it from the pop up menu it does not change unless you type the reminder again as initially set.
Regarding the invisible back button to my personal opinion it helps when you have to move a bunch of tasks to another list. Useful for two hand gestures!
Concerning the latest beta…
Are lists now needing to be archived before deleting? I noticed there was no longer the pull all the way left to delete on the “my lists” page. If that was in a previous build I apologize. I don’t often delete lists so haven’t tried this in awhile.
Thank you that sounds like a bug fix, noting it here!
Ah yes, that was also in these betas. We have been kind of trying to remove double loaded swipes in general. (Deleting lists from archive will delete them for real.)
