Do NOT delete your app if it crashes and other migration updates

Mblesc, it is getting more difficult from here… but if you have full device iCloud backups on, that has been helping some. If you can send me some more details at phill@impending.com (email or iMessage) let me try to help.

My device updated to 17.2 and I can see my lists again. Is there a way to watch the welcome messages again? I rushed through them, eager to know if my lists survived. The new appearance will take getting used to… Did we lose the drag and drop into another list option? Or have I not discovered how to do this yet? I’ve had some issues. For instance, the app would stop responding when I scroll through the list. Also, the headings load oddly, like the words smear into being as opposed to easily appearing like the text below. It’s still new but this is what I’ve experienced so far. Thanks for not losing the lists!

Drag & Drop Between Lists: While dragging a row (or multiple), use other hand to back out (recommend the new back button) and then you can drop them off in a list, or hover for a couple seconds over one to spring load into it.

Hey, do you by chance have some very very long lists? The new Clear is struggling some there and we have more work to do. I posted some tips above:

And yeah as @Dunsford posted you can now move item(s) between lists! That’s new in the 2.0 and wasn’t possible on iPhone 1.x.

I think I missed this. And absolutely, we will not put you all through this again, touched a super hot stove, got some 2nd degree burns… going to be very extra careful next time we’re touching data. So relieved to hear you are back and appreciate the context.

I do have long lists and within those lists, a line item can become a long paragraph. It’s more obvious now because the new format shows the entire line item as opposed to showing only some; then, I’d just scroll within the line, never really appreciating how long it got. Basically, the app doubles as a notepad too. It’s feeling embarrassing. I need to delete items, lists even and organize the whole thing. This update experience makes that clear.

I can confirm that moving the item works if a short to-do line item but the long ones freak the screen out. Scrolls like mad until I let the item go. Seems to return to the list I tried to move it from.

Interesting, so these are items with tons of text, where maybe they are even taller than the screen? I could see our scroll handling getting confused, will try to remember this one to look at later. I use Clear as a simple notepad in some lists, it’s not its main purpose but ideally it still handles it OK!

Hello!
Adding my name into the mix here.

First let me say I’ve been a massive fan of clear since the OG version many years ago and I was beyond thrilled to hear you were developing Clear 2!

At any rate, looks like I’ve gotten myself into a small bind between versions here. Fortunately, the vast majority of my old lists (from pre Beta - old Clear) seemed to have migrated over to Clear 2.0 just fine. Since about September or so (throughout the Beta testing period) I had been using Clear Beta builds via the TestFlight app. Migrating to Clear 2.0 on the official launch seems to have just grabbed everything from my original Clear, NOT anything since using the Beta app.

If this cannot be solved it’s really not the end of the world, it would be a few months of data, really only a couple of lists, they would be nice to bring back if possible, but certainly not the end of the world.

Anyway, keep up the awesome work! Love your app!

Take care.

Jeremy M

Thank you for all of your help in advance.

Hey Jeremy, my first thought is have you checked the Archive? There was some logic in the migration where if you had both 1.x and beta data, the data you last interacted with would be imported into My Lists, and the other set into Archive. Let me know. (Can also continue at phill@impending.com if this doesn’t resolve it.)

Any updates for those experiencing the “black screen with sound” crash? I attempted the TestFlight but still opened to a black screen followed by a crash. Please advise! Thanks in advance.

Hey Tress, still in the same place as my last email with that one :frowning: (Did you receive one from me a few days ago? phill@impending.com) If not I will send you a copy.

This is the remaining major data lockout issue we’re aware of that is still on our list but we now shooting a bit in the dark hoping for a foothold/theory.

(The other remaining known issue for 1.x people migrating into 2.x is some real performance issues and sluggishness for people with either very long lists, or tons of lists. For this at least we do have some starting ideas for optimizations we will be tackling in updates earlier this year. If your performance issues are centered within your long lists try this: Do NOT delete your app if it crashes and other migration updates - #229 by phillryu)

Phill, hello, I am still not finding any sign of my legacy lists. My TestFlight is showing v. 2.0.3 (8050), and as being active on the Clear app. I am 100 percent certain I did not delete the Clear app at any time, so I am remaining hopeful that my lists are still somewhere. Any advice?

I’ll review your previous emails/situation after lunch here. In the meantime can you check that you have full device iCloud backups on? Or let me know if you were a past customer of Clear Mac. phill@impending.com

Thank you, yes, I did receive the email from you for the test flight but was unsuccessful, still getting a black screen. I didn’t have a lot of lists, but I did have one list that had a lot of items. Any other action I should take at this time? Really hoping for a fix, been using the apps for many years and this has been a major disruption.

We do not have an actionable theory on this black screen issue :frowning: it’s the final remaining one that we’re aware of yet just don’t have traction on a fix.

Can I assume you weren’t a past customer of Clear Mac? That is one of the remaining last ditch options, to see if we could pull data there from sync and recover.

The basic situation is… at any point you could delete and install fresh and start over. But then we would lose the data you have stored, which 2.x is currently locking you out of but not sure why. It’s a real mess, and extra frustrating because we still don’t understand this well enough to offer a timeline on a fix.

I’m not optimistic this will work but does this trigger a share sheet for saving out an export of your list data from Clear? http://tinyurl.com/2m7h4uar

In case it does, you could use this to email a copy to yourself for backup + send to us as well, phill@impending.com. This could at least allow you to safely delete/fresh install, and use it for now, and maybe help us with some clues. (While at least leaving the window open if we do eventually figure this out / fix it, to import your data again.)

At any point, I can send you a gift certificate / PayPal too… as some form of refund and to go towards a working replacement. Doesn’t make up for this but we can refund you several times over your original purchase because we messed up this bad.

Finally will note of the half dozen or so of you with this issue who we’re in touch with, I don’t think someone has yet attempted the ‘full iCloud device restore’ Hail Mary attempt. (This backup includes your 1.x data… we just don’t have huge reason to believe 2.x would be able to handle it differently.) If you want to give that a shot I can certainly help, but I consider it a real long shot.

I’m sorry this is just a bundle of bad news… you can also email me at phill@impending.com or even iMessage me there with questions or if able to produce that log etc. Really wish I had better options for you today, weeks in.

still waiting?? My information is lost…not coming up in Archive…what is the next step…?
This reply from you was Jan 8…where can I find my lists from years of use??
