I don’t want to make any promises but the work we have put into syncing certainly sets up for that future.
We actually did have a basic experience testing internally, but shelved it to focus and wrap up syncing to start. (You would get pushes showing a small list of items that someone else checked off, etc. which I think was a nice implementation compared to other apps.)
It seems with sync-related projects they tend to take longer and turn out to be more complicated than we thought setting out on it, so one step at a time!
Sorry about the late reply, but yeah you’re still welcome to join! (Instructions in the first post.)
@netsoph do you mean you don’t see them synced until you first open the app on the device with widget, then open the app on secondary device? We recently implemented background updating but it seems fairly sporadic, like a handful of times an hour that iOS will do it.
• More final presentation on Cloud (account) screen
• Fixes to theme syncing behavior
• Fixed flashing header on Cloud screen
Overall we consider this pretty close to shipping in beta state, hopefully reasonably soon. Please let us know with any final issue reports, or confusing first-setup experiences etc!
Thank you for your work on this! It’s been working great for me.
Couple of small questions:
Are you thinking of bringing any animations to the web app version?
In one of my lists, I have what looks like a “Shared” icon next to the list title. It isn’t present in any of my other lists, including those that I’ve ‘shared’ through text or an image… so I thought it may have something to do with the syncing alpha? (Side note, I’d love to have live shared lists! )
Also, as a lover of standalone Mac apps, I recently discovered the little standalone webapps that Safari can add to your dock. This fits my brain a lot better than a pinned tab – just thought I’d mention in case anyone else would like Clear on Mac to look / feel a bit more like a standalone app, rather than a browser tab
Oh! Another question: Is there another way to add new list items besides hitting return on an existing list item / on the list title? This feels fine when I already have list items, but when the list is empty, or full of completed items, it feels a little unintuitive to click on the list title and hit enter there. Obviously this is solved with gestures in the iOS app, but it feels like you need a button or something in lieu of those gestures.
I would definitely say the web client is less polished currently, and we are holding back there until some other pieces are in place. But I will also say it has a kind of document editing direction and we found that animations felt sluggish and more in-the-way in that context, so they would be more subtle.
The glyph is interesting, had you joined TestFlights in the past or just recently for this syncing? We will look into it here. It actually is associated with live list sharing but this is supposed to be internal only (It’s not coming soon, much further out if it happens!) Should make sure it’s totally shut down ahead of shipping initial sync.
Let me look into the adding items question. I like the idea of just typing and it starts entering an item at the top (if nothing else is in focus) but will have to do some testing if this is a viable direction.
Oh and yeah, the saving web apps feature is nice! I’ve been using it that way too, should definitely highlight it in the upcoming beta thread.
I only joined Clear’s TestFlight for the syncing (as far as I remember!). I thought it might have something to do with the internal testing of shared lists, haha.
Agree that ‘just type’ could be a nice interaction!
Just pushed build 9381 which could be the final TestFlight!
It should sync your unlocked collectibles now.
Our plan is to quietly release to App Store and do some final testing with the community, then ramp up to an official announcement in-app and our mailing list etc.
Thank you all for helping test and reporting issues and feedback.
It’s up there in the list of requested features. I think after syncing is shipped (exiting beta) and more finished, we will take some break and then do some roadmap planning.
That might be what I mean… Changes to lists don’t seem to sync over without opening the app on the respective platforms, regardless of how long I wait. Basically:
Have Clear installed on iPhone and iPad, both apps in background (not fully closed)
Have the widget on the homescreen on both devices
Add an item to a list on iPhone
Background the app
Wait hours
Clear for iPad widget does not update. Opening the app updates the list
Background the app, widget updates immediately after
