Syncing is surprisingly complicated behind the scenes to get right, so we are going to start with a small group of 50 testers recruited here from this thread.
Be prepared to share feedback and bug reports here and via email (help@impending.com) if you’re signing up to test at this early stage!
Important: this feature is planned for Clear Pro. For testing it will be ungated, however on release it will require a Clear Pro subscription to continue using Clear Web and multi-device syncing.
Ready to help us test it? Please follow these steps carefully!
Install and open the latest App Store version of Clear before installing this build. Keep the app in the foreground for at least 1 min.
Install the Sync alpha build by installing TestFlight, then joining this TestFlight group. (If you previously tested, you may need to remove yourself in TestFlight app from Clear testing first, then rejoin with the link.)
Go to Home (App level) > Account and create an account via Apple login. This will begin syncing.
If you plan to sync with other iOS devices, repeat steps 1, 3 and 4 on each secondary device.
You can now also login to Clear Web and access and manage your lists from a browser at app.useclear.com
Notes:
Onboarding lists might be duplicated
If you need to restore a backup, install the App Store build and restore the required backup. The Sync TestFlight can be installed again to re-enable sync.
If you do encounter a crash, please submit a report and try re-opening the app.
This set of features has been in the works for a long time, with Harshad building the syncing infrastructure and Arun developing the web client, and the team has been internally testing it for some time. But I’m sure you all will be using it in different ways and helping us identify and fix bugs and issues much more efficiently, to take it to beta, and then shipping stage.
We hope it proves useful for your Clear use! It’s certainly been the top requested feature for new Clear since its launch.
Please share initial thoughts and any bug reports here
Wahoo! I’ve followed steps 1-6, but my lists don’t appear to be syncing. My existing lists/items in the app haven’t appeared on the web. I created a new list/items on the web but that isn’t showing up in the app yet. I’ll wait a bit to see if it’s a timing thing. I’ll also submit via the app.
OK - web is now showing stuff. It seems to be showing some lists that I archived/deleted previously. The lists that are current are appearing in the web app and have the correct items - win!
Thanks I’ll be looping Harshad here into this thread. So after a bit of time it’s showing all your current lists, but also some ones from your archive?
(I think I’ve encountered the same issue or similar a couple times but it was hard to reproduce or track down, there’s definitely some hiccup there to address!)
That is correct - it seemed to take about 5 minutes for the lists to appear on the web app. All of my current lists do appear, but several that I previously deleted (so archived, then deleted from archive) are appearing in the web app as current. One old deleted list is appearing in archive on the web as well.
Got it, that detail sounds relevant. Couple questions, were you on previous betas before? And do you have a rough guesstimate on how many lists you were syncing over?
I have been on previous betas. Not sure how many lists I had when on previous betas, but entirely possible that I’m seeing lists from when I was on a previous beta. I was not on a beta just prior to installing this version - was on App Store release.
Also a note on the “5 minutes before seeing lists on the web” - I had created a list/items on the web app (when it was empty - during those first 5 minutes). That list didn’t sync back to iOS app - just seemed to disappear once my current lists appeared in the web app. Now that my current lists do appear in the web app I am able to add new lists/items in the web app and they are syncing back to the iOS app successfully (and quickly!)
Marking as done syncs between phone and web; however, when I delete a task by swiping right, it still shows as checkmarked and not deleted on the web. Thanks
Thanks for trying out the alpha build and sharing the feedback. A couple of questions about the deleted task staying on web:
Does the deleted task stay on web if you make other changes within the list using the app on the phone (like adding / updating tasks)?
If you make changes in that list on web, are they reflecting on the app on the phone?
Hi Harshad - for me the zombie list that appear on the web were not re-appearing in iOS when they had their previous names. For example - I had a list named “food log” that I had previously deleted and was not appearing in iOS. After the initial sync (so after 5 minutes or so) I did see “food log” on the web. It did not appear in iOS. Then after maybe 20-30 minutes all my zombie lists on the web showed up as “–” rather than their previous names (so “food log” that had items in it became “–” and had no items). I didn’t think they were appearing on iOS - but actually I think maybe they were as blank named lists at the bottom of my lists (I could scroll way down to a blank screen - Venti theme so list list is black). I then edited one of the zombie lists on the web - gave it a name and added an item. Waited a little bit (less than a minute - but way longer than the sync seems to take when I edit live lists) and it didn’t look like anything happened in iOS. Then I tried to select the first row below my live lists, and it was my edited zombie list - the new zombie list name appeared and its item appeared. I can also edit a zombie list in iOS (rather - select a row below all my lists that doesn’t look like a list, but really is) - give it a new name and add an item - and that is reflected back on web.
So - seems like for the first 20-30 minutes I had zombie lists with name and items from when they were alive. Then all those zombie lists turned into blank/empty lists, and at that point they did appear to be syncing (appear both on web and iOS).
So long so good! Just tested iPad and iPhone sync and it’s working really great for an alpha. Set up was clear enough!
There’s a not so big bug, when in syncing some of my bolder and smaller test just switch to normal size. Other than that can’t see anything else. Going to try web next
Ah yeah, we don’t support the styles yet in the web client but it should also still preserve it on iOS! Hopefully it’s a straightforward fix will chat with the team tomorrow.
Even after 10 minutes of wait my lists didnt apprear on the web. I had to log out then log back in on my iphone for it to work.
no problem with sync so far. any new item or change happen after 2 seconds max.
I do have several questions:
-how can i create a new to do? i only managed to find the “hit enter at the end of the above item” to create a new item. Is this the only way currently?
-I dont know how to delete an item. apart from manually deleting it with backspace
-I use safari on a mac and tend to use the gestures but they dont work unfortunately. I guess this is impossible without an app, right?
-in the future, will be have the ability to have several lists opened side by side?
