WIP Keyboard Toolbar (with formatting, reminders, and more?)

This is a preview of something we have been internally testing, along with exploring a couple possible future Pro features:

We have bent over backwards in various ways over the years, trying to avoid visible buttons like this in Clear. (Reminders especially, the way it used to be ‘add reminder’ visible whenever you created an item in 1.x)

Meanwhile there have always been some feature requests that I agree would be useful, but there is only so much we can tuck and hide away in gestures, especially without adding more and more that has to be explicitly taught to new users and aren’t easily discoverable.

So we are trying out this toolbar, that would include reminder toggle, the current header/caption text formatting options, and room for potential pro features.

I don’t want to specifically hype those feature ideas because we’re still experimenting with them, but the two we are looking at are simple ‘repeating tasks’ that would regenerate on clearing them away, and nested listing. Two very long-running and popular requests, that I feel are much more justified with Pro gating and framing.

I think the major tradeoffs are:
(Positive) Can help enable some more power user/pro functions in Clear
(Positive) Discoverable, simple, and more obvious for the features moved into it
(Negative) Some added minor distraction, to Clear’s pristineness, while adding or editing. But it’s somewhat mitigated IMO by designing it as an extension of the keyboard and separated in this way from your content.

For the purists who prefer Clear at its most minimal, we would probably include a setting where you can simply hide the toolbar, if you don’t need its functions.

Let me know what you all think! We really want to make sure a design change like this is very solid, if we’re to ship it.

I like it, I would definitely use it. I really want to test it. :+1:t3:

Not bad, but looks a bit cluttered. Might be because the font icon isn’t uniform with the others.

I love the idea of reminders, repeating tasks, and nesting. The headings seem a bit redundant with the ease of : & space for these format changes. I would prefer to see additional features like sorting in that precious keyboard real estate.

Sorting is another fairly common request that we are considering for the toolbar in its future, though it would probably be contextual to editing the list title since it would affect the entire list.

I will note we have also been considering cutting the text shortcuts in favor of this to simplify overall as they interact somewhat messily with this new take… doesn’t feel great when toggling for it to add/remove characters. I think we need to weigh each direction overall and then pick and commit to one.

(We did think on possible text shortcuts for the planned new functions, but it starts feeling kind of arbitrary and obviously requires teaching/memorization.)

@Ruben there should be some refinement on the icons as we go, these are initial stabs at them.

Oh great! Sorting would be a great option as well.

This seems like an elegant solution to a few different feature requests/changes, and I’m all for trying it out. I like the idea of it being out of the way until I need it when the keyboard is on-screen.

Yeah, one thing I’m anticipating is some people being annoyed by the added chrome, so today we tried swiping up or down to show/hide it. I think this feels pretty promising so far.

I Love Clear being clean. But the option of adding a hide the toolbar.

I’m pretty sure we will ship it with this swipe up/down gesture to hide or show it, question will mostly be if we enable that by default for everyone, or maybe offer a setting to opt-into it. (We would like to avoid some group of confused users hiding it by accident and thinking the toolbar feature broke.)

We appreciate all of your hard work.Thank you so much.

I love this and think it’s really needed

Have you ever considered the idea of displaying options with a swipe gesture? Imagine the farther you swipe, the more options appear before you! – Minimalist, cleaner, and useful.

We have, but I generally don’t love double or multi-loading the swipe gestures, due to accidental triggers and in how they are by nature kind of hidden.

If those actions were very tied to the current existing functions (checking off, or deleting) we would consider. For example, I’m considering bringing back double loading for archiving/delete options for a list. But otherwise trying to avoid!

Here’s a quick video demo of the toolbar and its showing/hiding gesture I posted on twitter: https://x.com/UseClear/status/1900262142202261689

In that case… I think the best case scenario would be showing the option bar when touching the item list. For example, if I touch the item without swiping, the options bar could appear, or it might also be helpful to have it show up when starting to swipe. Basically, it would appear when needed.

Friendly Disclaimer: I’m not trying to impose my ideas or changes, I’m just brainstorming with you since you opened this thread for feedback. I’m aware that you have complete control of the UI/UX aspects of the app.

I appreciate the mockup. Can you explain it some more? Mostly that tapping right now would edit the item (and bring up the keyboard/pro toolbar). Are you thinking something more specific? Like it wouldn’t show when creating an item, but only when editing?

In short, I like it!

Looks good and simple swipe to get rid of it.
How does anyone feel about locking a task? Or atleast locking it until the reminder comes on so you don’t accidentally swipe away?
Just an idea, not sure if super useful.

Personally I would like to see a Trash where all deleted items live until emptied.

I’ve found that I occasionally lose an item because I accidentally swipe-delete it with my fingertip without intending to… just a quick little movement to the right when my finger hits the screen and… “Oops, I deleted something”.

A Trash would give me peace-of-mind that I’m not losing items. Maybe it could be an optional user setting for those who want it?

I agree with you, I do that. The problem comes occasionally when I inadvertently touch/tap my screen without intent and find that it slides an item slightly to the left — just enough to trigger the X.
