Animations in version 2.3 (or 2.2.10?)

Very true, just interjecting.

Phill, did you have some time to read our feedback here? Some communication would be appreciated, so we know what we can expect with these changes going forward :smiling_face_with_tear:

It would be helpful if you capture or help us reproduce things like ā€˜the gesture not workingā€™ or breaking other gestures. I have been using this design for months, as have some dozens of testers, and I havenā€™t run into the gesture just not triggering and such. Not saying it couldnā€™t be a bug, more that it would be way more helpful if anyone has steps to reproduce an issue like this, or a screen recording that captures a bug, etc.

@Prisma Rolling back this change would not be good. I absolutely guarantee you it would only spawn more confusion, a counter thread where people are both admonishing us for tinkering yet again, and also to bring back the card UI.

As an example there were ten times as many people who were very angry about the initial Clear 2.0 animation change and implored us to revert it to the 1.x.

@aftershocked well, I guess the good news is itā€™s not theoretical future ones. Clearā€™s usage has grown somewhat over the last few months, reversing a ten year decline.

P.S. I am still planning on more properly digesting the feedback from this update but Iā€™m traveling this week on vacation with some friends. Please allow me this break, this is the first time Iā€™ve traveled out of the country in like over ten years.

Well thatā€™s upsetting and depressing.

I guess I will keep trying to force myself into liking this new design, but if I canā€™t (which seems like the most possible outcome considering how much I dislike it), sadly Iā€™ll have to bid farewell to the app.

Using Clear this last week has been a joyless experience, which is justā€¦ Sad to me, considering how invested I was into it before this whole mess.

I support your explorations and attempts at improving Clear. But this one in particular just feels wrong. Like it goes against the DNA of what the app is. It would be akin to getting rid of the gestures altogether.

I just wanna clarify Iā€™m not angry at all. Iā€™m just deeply sad.

Oh wellā€¦

Phil- enjoy your vacation -

When you get back, just make the animations something we can switch. Make the cards UI default but allow the older animations to be something we can select. Hell - put it in the shop even (animations could be a new category even!)

But there are a ton of us who really would appreciate a choice

Yeah, I agree, that would be a good compromise.

I do have some aversion to making it an option ā€“ the old animations were quite complicated, and hard to work with. (And I will note, kind of vestigial in that it was originally designed to pair with a 3D Touch hard press on the screen.)

On one hand weā€™re quite willing to put in extra work on things like this in Clear vs. other apps when they align with what makes the app feel special. But weā€™re also a tiny team stretched thin, and we feel a lot of pressure to make Clear sync and available on other platforms soon, so this one behind the scenes felt disproportionately complicated and not elegant I guess.

I donā€™t even know if we could reasonably reconstruct it for Clear Web or Mac eventually depending on how we approach it. It certainly doesnā€™t work on devices like watch, or features like iOS widgets.

That said an option does line up with the more customizability of new Clear so Iā€™m not 100% ruling it outā€¦ itā€™s just way more of a commitment than letting you change fonts or colors.

Appreciate the cutting me some slack with vacation and such. I think some of you probably get that I am the kind of person who wishes for each of you feeling super satisfied and loving the app. The flip side of that is itā€™s kind of innately impossible to fully do this, for everyone, with limited resources + quite often a real amount of conflicting feedback. And that really weighs on me!

Iā€™m also looking forward to getting sync in testing reasonably soon. Thatā€™s been a huge ongoing project for half of this year and I hope it will be a crowdpleaser and major ā€˜fixā€™ when we restore it for new Clear. And frankly just a relieving of building up tension, as the project keeps stretching out. (Solid syncing experience is hard to build!!)

Enjoy your vacations, man. Sorry if my previous message was too harsh. Iā€™m just sad and passionate about this app, but the discussion about its animations can wait until you are back home.

And yeah, I appreciate all the work you do and how you try to please everyone. As a designer myself, I know thatā€™s nearly impossible, so I get your conundrum.

Iā€™m excited about sync and Apple Watch support, btw. So Iā€™m glad youā€™re prioritizing that.

Once again, enjoy your vacations, we can discuss this further once youā€™re back home!

(Perhaps today with the other ones? :pray:t3:)

I just couldnā€™t become comfortable with the current version (2.2.10) of the app regarding the animations. So I downgraded to 2.2.9 ā€“ yes, that is indeed possible!

Here is how to do that:

https://github.com/NyaMisty/ipatool-py?tab=readme-ov-file#download-old-version

Additionally to

pip3 install -r requirements.txt

as described in the ipatool-py readme I needed to do an extra step because I ran into this problem: https://github.com/frida/frida/issues/2964:

pip3 install --force-reinstall -v "frida==16.4.10"

Finally

pip3 install flask

was needed, too.

After the setup is done, iTunes is started (and you are logged in with your Apple-ID/Account) and get_header.py runs you can download the ipa file:

python main.py lookup -i 493136154 -c DE download -s http://127.0.0.1:9000 --appVerId 868506363

(replace ā€˜DEā€™ with your country code)

You get com.realmacsoftware.clear-10031-493136154-868506363.ipa then, which is version 2.2.9!

I did it in a virtual machine to not mess with my regular iTunes installation.

An alternative would be https://www.txthinking.com/talks/articles/ios-old-version-app-en.article, but I didnā€™t try that.

To install the .ipa file to downgrade Clear I used 3uTools. See https://test-www.3u.com/tutorial/details/1505/how-to-install-ipa-file-in-iphone-using-3utools
A different way is described here: https://www.txthinking.com/talks/articles/ios-old-version-app-en.article#install-the-ipa-file-to-the-phone

By the way, you could even fetch and install a Clear 1.x version if you prefer thisā€¦

Any updates on this? Is the idea of at least bringing the old animations back as an option still on the table?

Yeah, the new animations are so clunky and counterintuitive (the number of times I have to try something as simple as closing a list :sob:) it was the final push that had me transferring 90% of the tasks I kept in Clear to my other productivity app. Iā€™ll keep Clear around for like a daily checklist, but the new animations genuinely make the app unusable if youā€™re trying to do anything more than look at one or two tasks and have more than one single list to refer to. Like I struggled along for a month or so, but the new animations are just Badā€”not in the ā€œchange is hardā€ sense, but in the ā€œthis is not functioningā€ sense.

Yeah, sadly I agree. My usage of Clear has decreased dramatically since these new animations rolled out.

The fact that reminders are now so obtrusive and always get in the way of me editing the text of my items doesnā€™t help either.

I feel like Iā€™m constantly fighting the appā€¦ Which was never a thing with Clear before.

Fighting the app is a good way to put itā€”especially with the reminders!! They functioned just fine before, but now they do pop up soooo easily you spend more time swiping them away than like, whatever task you were trying to add or edit. And again, I know the attitude is just ā€˜get used to the changes,ā€™ which is fair enough for certain things. But if something literally doesnā€™t workā€¦
